Twelve years of Spring Cycle

Darryn Capes-DavisCommunity, Cycling

This year I celebrated 12 years of riding the Spring Cycle.

Back in 2007 I had taken up cycling to gain fitness and reduce weight. I was hitting the scales at about 98 kg. I had bought a Huffy bike from K-Mart and had started commuting on bike from Carlingford to Westmead. My first spring cycle was on the Huffy, even with a small shifter as the wheels were hex nuts and not quick release. My first Spring Cycle was 50km version.

The Huffy pretty much fell apart after about 1000 km and I purchased my first real bike being a Trek Soho 3, which I still have today (though much gear replaced). In 2008 I rode the Spring Cycle with my daughter, Renee in toe on a tag-a-long. Again it was the 50km version. This time I could ditch the shifter as the Trek had quick release skewers.

Fast forward to 2019 and I entered again, this time being my third time at the 100 km+ distance. Alas, my reduced fitness due to the hip & shoulder fracture in Jan 2019 meant that I cut the distance short only doing 60km. Riding to the start and back home meant 84 km for the day, the longest full day distance since my accident of Jan 2019.

I always enjoy the Spring Cycle and congratulate Bicycle NSW on its history of presenting Spring Cycle since 1984.
